Viviparous: Their seeds germinate while still attached to the parent tree. ![]() A waxy coating on the leaves seals in water and minimises evaporation.Succulent leaves: Mangroves, like desert plants, store fresh water in thick succulent leaves.Survival in Extreme Conditions: With their roots submerged in water, mangrove trees thrive in hot, muddy, salty conditions that would quickly kill most plants. These roots have numerous pores through which oxygen enters the underground tissues.Mangroves have special roots for this purpose called breathing roots or pneumatophores.Hence the mangrove root system absorbs oxygen from the atmosphere. But in a mangrove environment, the oxygen in soil is limited or nil. Low oxygen: Underground tissue of any plant needs oxygen for respiration.Saline environment: They can survive under extreme hostile environments such as high salt and low oxygen conditions.Mangroves are flowering trees, belonging to the families Rhizophoraceae, Acanthaceae, Lythraceae, Combretaceae, and Arecaceae. The word ‘mangrove’ may refer to the habitat as a whole or to the trees and shrubs in the mangrove swamp.A Mangrove is a small tree or shrub that grows along coastlines, taking root in salty sediments, often underwater. Now in its third year, thanks to the generous support of a number of parents and alumni, in particular a leadership commitment from the Bouchard family, THRIVE is a fully-funded program. It was the desire to strengthen our impact in the area of well-being that led to our THRIVE well-being initiative. In 2015, after a year of research in the area of well-being, however, we realized that we could make a significant difference in this area for all members of our community-students and staff alike-not just at LCS, but also beyond, because we have a strong foundation already in place. Since its inception, the school’s programming has been rooted in its mission: "To challenge and enable students to reach their individual potential in mind, body and spirit," the campus is located in a beautiful natural environment, and our staff and faculty have a long history of nourishing genuine and caring relationships with their students and colleagues. At Lakefield College School, we have always believed that our school community provided all of the basic essentials for good health- a sound mind in a sound body.
